Balasubrahmanyam was born into an Orthodox Telugu Brahmin family in Konetammapeta near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. He is the second son in a family of three sons and five daughters. His father S. P. Sambamurthy was a well-known exponent of Harikatha and his sister S.P. Sailaja is a former actress-singer in Tollywood, married to Subhalekha Sudhakar. He has a daughter, Pallavi and son, S. P. B. Charan.
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is an Indian playback singer who hails from southern India but made it big in Hindi movies. He shot to fame in bollywood when ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ released and since then went on to croon many super hit numbers. He also sings for Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films as well.
He is a very known voice down south. He is popularly known as Balu and S.P.B. He has also won National Award for Best Playback Singer six times. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam has sung more than 50000 songs in 15 different languages for a career spanning four decades and counting. He is the only Indian singer to have achieved the National Award across four languages. He has also received Padmashri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011.
SP Balasubramanyam made his debut as an actor in the Telugu film ‘Pellante Noorella Panta’, released in 1969. Thereafter, he was offered character actor roles in many Telugu films. He acted around 50 movies. He also went on to do Tamil films, in which he contributed as a supporting actor.
Balasubrahmanyam became a dubbing artist with Kamal Hassan’s film ‘Manmadha Leela’, the dubbed version of ‘Manmadha Leelai’. He has also provided voice-overs for various artists. He was awarded Nandi Award for Best Male Dubbing Artist for the films ‘Annamayya’ and ‘Sri Sai Mahima’.
He is married to Savitri and has two brothers and five sisters. He is also the elder brother of the well-known singer S.P. Sailaja. He has a daughter, Pallavi and a son called S.P.B. Charan, also a known singer.
